Which Kindle Fire Should you Buy?

Fire HD 6, Fire HD 7 or Fire HDX?

Remember that size is not the only difference between the Fire HD 6″ version and the 7″ version!

Fire HD 6 Fire HD 7 Kindle Fire HDX 7″
Screen diameter 6″ 7″ 7″
Screen area 16.1 sq. inches 22 sq. inches

(36% bigger than HD 6)

22 sq. inches

(36% bigger than HD 6)

Total pixels 1280 x 800 = 1,024,000px (~1 Mega Pixel) 1280 x 800 = 1,024,000px (~1MP) 1920 x 1200 = 2,304,000px (2.3MP)
Resolution (pixels per inch; ppi) √(1,024,000/16.1) = 252 PPI √(1,024,000/22) = 216 PPI √(2,304,000/22) = 323 PPI
Note that both HD 6 and HD 7 have the same number of total pixels, however, the HD 7 has a larger square area. As a result, the ppi [resolution] is lower on the HD 7 compared to the HD 6. So the HD6 display is superior as far as resolution goes! If you’d like to further understand PPIs, use this tool
CPU/ Processor Quad-core = 2 x 1.5 GHz cores and 2 x 1.2 GHz cores 2.2 GHz Quad-core processor
Note: Don’t freak out that the 1.5 GHz quad-core processor will not get you through your day-to-day tasks. Even this high-end tablet only has a 1.5 GHz triple-core processor. We’re not saying that the processor of the $99 Fire HD is more powerful than the processor of that $500 tablet. Processor performance is not just a function of the number of cores and the GHz value. What we’re saying is that 1.5 GHz quad-core processor is more than enough for 95% of the things we do on tablets.
RAM 1GB 1GB 2GB
Note: Again, don’t let the 1GB scare you because this flagship tablet only has 1GB of RAM and a dual-core processor. In the HD6 and HD7, you get 1GB of RAM with a quad-core processor!
Capacity 8GB or 16GB 8GB or 16GB 16GB, 32GB or 64GB
Note: 8GB fills up fast. My first Kindle Fire (the very first Kindle Fire that came out in 2011) had only 8GB of memory and it filled up very fast. At one point, I had to delete an app if I wanted to install a new one. Thus this model is recommended over this model.
Wi-Fi connectivity Single-band, single Antenna Wi-Fi Dual-band, dual-antenna Wi-Fi: faster streaming and fewer dropped connections
4G connectivity There is no option for 4G/cellular connectivity with these 2 models. If you’re a frequent traveler and plan on using this to check email etc. in transit, it won’t work. However, if you just plan on using this at home and/or work where there is Wi Fi, this would work just fine Wi-Fi + 4G LTE version does exist. Allows you to have on-the-go, mobile broadband
Speakers Mono Dual-stereo speakers Dual-stereo speakers
Front camera VGA camera – OK for Skype, but can get grainy under low lighting conditions 720p HD camera – high def. camera
Rear camera 2.0 MP HD camera – for making pics around you. However, again don’t expect these to be super-high print-quality under low lighting conditions None. In the HDX series, only this version has a rear camera
Built-in mic Yes Yes Yes, dual microphones
GPS Not unless you tether it to a cell phone (watch video below) or a gadget like this This version has a GPS sensor
Bluetooth Yes, let’s you use BT headphones to listen to music wirelessly

OK, So… Now What?

Step 1: Decide if you need a Fire HD or Fire HDX

Spec Kindle Fire HDX Fire HD Winner
Resolution 323 PPI 216 or 252 PPI, on the 7″ and 6″ models respectively HDX
Overall display quality Overall display quality is not just about resolution. It also has to do with Color accuracy, Contrast accuracy, Display calibration, Reflection/glare, Maximum brightness, Contrast ratio, Color temperature, Color gamut, Color error etc. As far as we know, no independent 3rd party has tested the Fire HD 6 and 7 for these features. However, last year, DisplayMate compared the displays of the Kindle Fire HDX 7, the iPad Mini with Retina Display and the Google Nexus 7 and they concluded that “The Kindle Fire had the best color accuracy and overall picture quality“…. “The Nexus 7 was a close second” … and that “The iPad mini Retina Display came in a very distant 3rd place finish“.Have no doubt, the overall video quality of the Fire HDX is MUCH BETTER than the quality on the Fire HD series. HDX
CPU 2.2 GHz quad core 1.5 GHz quad core HDX
RAM 2 GB 1 GB HDX
Storage 16, 32 or 64 GB 8 or 16 GB HDX
Wi-Fi Dual-band, dual-antenna Single-band, single-antenna HDX
4G connectivity Yes, built-in 4G option available No chance unless you get one of these HDX
GPS This version has a GPS sensor No chance without this HDX
Built-in mic Dual mic Single mic HDX
HD front camera Yes, for better picture quality during Skype calls No, VGA camera HDX
Rear camera None 2MP, HD camera Finally, the HD wins something
Price $199 $99 or $139 OK, the HD wins this too

Are you a PERSON A or PERSON B?

Person A: The better display, faster CPU and RAM, bigger built-in storage, better Wi Fi, 4G, GPS, better video quality on Skype are important to me. I watch a lot of movies and I’d rather watch them in ultra high definition. I also travel a lot, so I will use 4G and GPS a lot. Because I like to store a few HD movies on my Kindle while I’m flying, I want the bigger storage capacity as well. I also play high CPU-intensive 3D games, so the extra CPU power and extra RAM will come in handy. When I’m away, I Skype my family every night and my kids want to see me in HD. The answer is clear – you need this baby

Person B: I will only use this for reading books, browsing the web, checking email, watching the odd movie while on the train, playing angry birds every once in awhile when I’m bored. My kids will use this to play educational games and read story books as well. They can be clumsy. If they drop it and break it, I’d rather lose $66 or $139 than losing $199. So I’d rather save the $60 – $100 and use that money to give my wife a surprise – DO NOT CLICK THIS LINK if you aren’t 18 yet  . Hmm.. Okay… then scroll down…

If you’re a Person B, go to Step 2….

Step 2: Decide if you need a Fire HD 6 or Fire HD 7

Spec Fire HD 6 Fire HD 7 Winner
Price $99 $139 HD 6
Resolution 252 PPI 216 PPI HD 6
Portability Fire HD 6 fits in a trouser/jacket pocket more easily HD 6
Size HD 7 has a 36% bigger screen HD 7
Speakers Mono Stereo HD 7

What’s more important to you?

  • The $40, better resolution and higher portability? Go for the Fire HD 6
  • Bigger size and stereo speakers are more important ? Go for the Fire HD 7

It’s not rocket science

Here’s a video showing someone getting Google maps on a Wi-Fi only Kindle Fire
